VSI at Africa Day events in Dublin and Limerick
16 May 2010
Volunteers needed for VSI stands at Africa Days in Dublin (Sunday, May 16) and Limerick (Sunday (May 30)
VSI will have stands at the 2 Irish Aid sponsored Africa Days in Dublin (Iveagh Gardens) and Limerick (City Hall). This is a great opportunity to publicise the work of VSI to a wider public. We need volunteers to help with the stalls in both Limerick and Dublin. This year the theme of Africa Day is food and security and we have devised some exercises around this theme which volunteers will help out with on the day.
Africa Picture Food Quiz for children - asking them to identify different kinds of food which people eat in different African countries. We will have a large map of Africa with certain countries marked on it e.g. Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Zambia. There will also be small cut outs with the names of the food items associated with the particular countries. The children will be asked to place the cut out names onto the country where this food is produced and eaten in Africa. A special theme of chocolate -looking at cocoa bean production in Ghana and what happens to get a bar of chocolate in your local shop will be included. Fair Trade produce and chocolate will be given as prizes for competitors. There will be info sheets displayed on the foods featured in the quiz.
Africa Quiz for adults - a fun quiz about Africa - identifying countries, capitals, languages, flags; soccer players etc which will also include questions around the food theme. Fair Trade produce and chocolate will be given as prizes for the winners.
Africa Food and Water Photo Exhibition - VSI Volunteers who have worked in Africa will submit their best photos on the topic of food and water from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Ghana for a photo exhibition
